Hunsdon House is one of the UK's first custom built garden nursery schools. For over eighty years it has provided a safe and stimulating learning environment for children.

The school was founded in the 1920s by Katherine Woods, a pioneer in child education. Hunsdon House has always been a child-centred school.

teacher and children in the garden

We are a long-established nursery school (since the 1920s). Our philosophy and materials are inspired by Friedrich Froebel, Rudolf Steiner and Maria Montessori. Our curriculum follows the seasons and celebrations of the year.

The nursery provides a peaceful, happy learning environment which develops self-esteem and caring for others. We encourage children to grow in harmony with nature and become confident and responsible individuals.

Families from many different cultures have sought us out and their chidren have formed friendships in our warm and supportive setting. We celebrate each child’s uniqueness and have found that the children greatly enjoy learning each other’s languages and building early friendships within our community. Last year we welcomed children from ten different countries; this year we have children who have come from as far afield as China, Japan, Africa, India and Italy.

These two are communicating their friendship freely although neither speaks the other's language.
