Hunsdon House is one of the UK's first custom built garden nursery schools. For over eighty years it has provided a safe and stimulating learning environment for children.

The school was founded in the 1920s by Katherine Woods, a pioneer in child education. Hunsdon House has always been a child-centred school.

teacher and children in the garden

Our philosophy and materials are inspired by Friedrich Froebel, Rudolf Steiner and Maria Montessori. Our curriculum follows the seasons and celebrations of the year.

The nursery provides a peaceful, happy learning environment which develops self-esteem and caring for others. We encourage children to grow in harmony with nature and become confident and responsible individuals.

Families from many different cultures have sought us out and their chidren have formed friendships in our warm and supportive setting. We celebrate each child’s uniqueness and have found that the children greatly enjoy learning each other’s languages and building early friendships within our community. Last year we welcomed children from ten different countries; this year we have children who have come from as far afield as The Philippines, Norway and Spain,China, Japan, Singapore, Holland and Hungary!

.friends from all over the world

These children share warm friendships even though they all speak different languages.

Our staff also speak several different languages and we all try to learn some key words and phrases in each child's own language if we do not speak it ourselves. We have enjoyed learning new words in Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Polish, Italian and Catalan so far!
